After some review while sitting down at last to work on my query letter I decided the first chapter of the book meandered a bit much. I feel it should do more to befriend the reader's attention and less to disseminate information about the story (it's still thick with setting even after the changes). Chulon's flashback has been all but removed and the chapter as a whole has been refined down to a fraction of its former self. Now it drives directly at the first confrontation in (I think) a better fashion.
I am still clinging to some concern over the loss of a large chunk of Chulon's personal history (most notably his interactions with Katarine), but I might be able to work some of the details elsewhere into the story.
The final word count for the story is hovering around 135,000 words. It is possible I might devote some time to trimming any remaining fat from the narrative in an effort to get it closer to the 120,000 range.
